What is NLP? And what it is not!

What is NLP?

What is NLP?There is a lot of discussion lately about what exactly is NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) as it is becoming an important subject of study in human behaviour sciences. All along the discussions about NLP,  a lot of being said or claimed which may or may not be completely true. In the brief article, we shall see what NLP really is, and also, what it is not.

There have been many definitions of NLP by many people. Here are a few of them that I consider worth mentioning here.

According to Dr. RIchard Bandler (co-creator of NLP) in his book ‘Using Your Brain For A Change’, he says – “It’s an attitude that has to do with curiosity, with wanting to know about things, wanting to be able to influence things, and wanting to be able to influence them in a way that’s worthwhile”

As per Steve Andreas, ( aka John O. Stevens) “NLP is an explicit and powerful model of human experience and communication. Using the principles of NLP it is possible to describe any human activity in a detailed way that allows you to make many deep and lasting changes quickly and easily”. This definition is taken from a foreword from Richard Bandler & John Grinder Book – Frogs into Princes

There have been many more definitions. The one I like to mention here is that “NLP is a study of subjectivity in human behaviour”.

NLP is an approach to communication, behaviour, personal development and psychotherapy. It proposes a strong connection between our neurology ( how we think )  and our language (verbal and non verbal). It also proposes that changing how we express ourselves ( to ourselves and others) can change how our thinking works. And changing how our thinking works can change our results.

NLP also proposes that change is easy, and can be inculcated using linguistic patterns, with the use opportunities offers by altered states.

A study in NLP helps us look at experiences at a structure level, and if required, make small yet accurate changes to produce profound results. This has been demonstrated successfully all around the world.

Learning NLP helps you to understand how you own mind acts and reacts on language patterns, and how you can use this ability to bring changes in your parameters of success.

What NLP is NOT!

NLP is not magic. It is not a miracle.
It is a way that helps you create change and can have profound results that may seem like magic or miracles.

NLP is not a therapy or a medicine science.
NLP can make you bring change in your habits or any sort. It may also result is getting over physical pain or problems. The word ‘therapy’ is an overused word in many subjective modalities. NLP does help in psychotherapy and psychology, but it is not a therapy in itself.

NLP is not a spiritual / magical modality.
NLP, as a field of study, is not about how spiritual you are, or can be. NLP. It makes no claim about what your soul is, or how it should be.  A lot of mix of belief systems has sprouted around NLP, and a lot of training programs do use terms like soul, magic, miracles etc, but the study of NLP ideally keeps itself clean of suck belief systems. NLP can be used with these belief systems, but does not include them.

What makes change easy?

The experience that you gain when you practice NLP helps you understand the structure of change. This understanding and experience makes change easy. When you are able to make changes easily, your have a very high probability of getting the results you want, in many areas of your life.

How does one learn NLP?

The core of NLP learning is about modelling excellence. When you are able to understand and be completely aware of structure of behaviours, you can model it and replicate the results.

The study of NLP, in an NLP Training Program, is about learning to be aware of the structures of language and behaviours, and how to use them to make change possible. Each training also includes some techniques that you can model and master. These techniques differ from school to school and most t technique can be found during research and later study. What is more important to understand how any NLP technique works, and how is it useful.

According to Dr Richard Bandler, NLP is not about therapy or magic. It is about education and teaching people to run their own brains.
